A New Chapter for Sentimental Gold: A Custom Ring Made in Memory
Some pieces of jewellery are worth far more than the precious metals and gemstones they contain. They hold memories of people, places and moments in our lives — and sometimes, those memories deserve to be carried forward in a new way.
Recently, we had the privilege of working with a customer on a deeply meaningful jewellery remodelling project following the loss of her husband last year. Her wish was to transform sentimental gold into a new ring that would honour his memory, while keeping an important connection to the jewellery that had been part of their life together.

Giving Sentimental Gold New Life
Old, inherited or sentimental jewellery doesn't always need to remain tucked away in a jewellery box.
At Foster & Co, we can work with customers to explore opportunities to remodel existing jewellery or use suitable sentimental gold in the creation of something new.
It might be an engagement or wedding ring that carries special memories, jewellery inherited from a loved one, or several pieces collected over many years. Remodelling can provide an opportunity to preserve what makes those pieces meaningful while creating jewellery that better suits the person who will wear it today.
Depending on the jewellery, we may be able to reuse precious metals and gemstones or incorporate elements of the original piece into an entirely new design.
One Story, Two New Pieces
There was enough sentimental gold within this project to create another special piece: a handcrafted knot ring that will be gifted to a family member.
The knot is a beautifully simple symbol of connection, making it particularly fitting for this project.
By creating two rings from sentimental gold, something that belonged to one chapter of this family's story can now continue in two new pieces — one worn in memory and another passed on to someone special.
It is a wonderful example of what can be possible when we look beyond jewellery as simply an object and consider the story held within its materials.

Giving Old and Sentimental Jewellery a New Life
Many of us have jewellery tucked away that is no longer worn.
It may be an inherited piece that isn't quite your style, an old engagement or wedding ring, jewellery from a loved one, or several gold pieces collected over a lifetime.
While the original jewellery may not suit you anymore, its sentimental value can make the thought of parting with it impossible.
That's where jewellery remodelling can offer another option.
At Foster & Co Family Jewellers, we can assess your existing pieces and explore whether suitable gold, gemstones or other elements can be incorporated into a new design.
Depending on the jewellery and the requirements of the new piece, remodelling old gold jewellery can allow us to preserve part of the original while transforming it into something that suits the person who will wear it today.
It could become a new ring, pendant, earrings or another completely bespoke design.
Rather than leaving something precious hidden away in a jewellery box, a thoughtful jewellery redesign can give it the opportunity to be loved and worn again.

You Don't Need to Have the Design Figured Out
One of the most common misconceptions about custom jewellery design is that you need to know exactly what you want before speaking to a jeweller.
You don't.
Some customers come to us with sketches, photographs and saved inspiration. Others bring in their existing jewellery and know there are certain elements they'd like to preserve.
And sometimes, the starting point is simply a story.
Our job is to listen.
We talk about what the jewellery means to you, what you'd like the new piece to represent, how you'd like to wear it and which elements of the original jewellery are important to preserve.
From there, we begin refining those ideas into a design that can actually be made.
From an Idea to a Quote and Then to the Bench
The design and quoting stage is an important part of every custom project.
Once we understand your vision, we can explore the practical details: the design itself, suitable precious metals and gemstones, what may be reusable from your existing jewellery, and the craftsmanship required to create the finished piece.
We then refine the concept with you and provide a quote based on the agreed design and work involved before proceeding with manufacture.
It's a collaborative process.
You bring the memories, inspiration and ideas. We bring the design knowledge and craftsmanship needed to translate them into something tangible.
For us, that's one of the most rewarding parts of creating custom jewellery in Hervey Bay — taking an idea that may exist only in someone's imagination and gradually refining it until it becomes a piece they can hold in their hand and wear for years to come.

Jewellery That Carries the Story Forward
The finished daisy and knot rings are very different pieces, but they're forever connected by the gold from which they were made.
For their owner and family, that connection is something no newly purchased piece could replicate.
The original jewellery has changed, but its story hasn't been lost. Instead, it has been given another chapter.
If you have sentimental, inherited or unworn jewellery sitting at home, we'd love to help you explore what it could become.
Visit Foster & Co Family Jewellers in Hervey Bay to talk with our team about jewellery remodelling and custom design. Bring in your jewellery, your inspiration — or simply your story — and we can begin exploring the possibilities together.
